“Over 60 million Americans play poker at least once a month, and a growing amount of young adults are driving this new trend,” said Premo Pictures co-founder and Executive Producer, Tone Boots, via a statement. “We believe that fusing poker with the elements of celebrity lifestyles and music will bring our viewers a fresh spin on the poker phenomenon.”
“‘Hip Hop Hold ‘Em combines the booming popularity of poker with the hip-hop culture to create one of the most unique and entertaining shows on television this fall,” added Jimmy Rosemond, CEO of Czar Entertainment, and manager to The Game. “The show provides us with a great opportunity for our continued expansion into the world of film and television and to further establish our brand.”
The biggest issue I had with celebrity poker is that, unlike regular championships, the contestants play for charities and not for their own money - which generally completely changes the way people play.
Announced participants include Dj Envy, Pete Rock, AZ, Rhymefest and mixtape legend Dj Clue; plus Big Trigger and boxer Zab Judah [wildcards I guess].
The show will also feature behind-the-scenes look at one of the celebrities homes [wtf for?] and a performance each night.
HipHop Hold’em premiers October 6th; stay tuned to GroundUp for a weekly rundown.
