Don’t call it a comeback, because he releases an album or two every couple years. For the last ten Lionel Richie has been hitting back with seven or so albums trying to get back on top. Which last time was 1985.

This time is different, he’s got an idea. Instead he’s working with today’s best, Jermaine Dupri, Dallas Austin and Raphael Saadiq.

“I asked them, ‘What does Lionel Richie sound like in 2006?’ ” Richie said to New York Times, “And they said, ‘The same way he sounded like in 1976 — we’ll just bring you new beats.’ ”

This is somewhat similar to last year’s Richie comeback when he got StarGate [NeYo, Rihanna, Beyonce] to produce Coming Home.

Richie goes on to comment on current pop music. “Today we’ve learned to celebrate mediocrity,” he said. “Back in the day we had creative artists; today we have created artists.”
