On Christmas morning James Brown passed away from heart failure after being admitted to hospital for severe pneumonia the day before.

Rapper Nas had this to say:

“I had the opportunity to meet him and present a award to him this year with Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and others,” he told SOHH. “I spoke in front of hundreds in his honor. I looked directly at him. He smiled while I told him how I used his music with mine and how much he’s done for us and how I love him. I’m lucky to have had that moment, shook his hand. He was pure greatness.”

Bowlegged Lou, from band Full Force - who produced Brown’s last couple of successful records - said “We remained good friends up until his passing. We will remember the great month and a half of great times with Mr. Brown in the studio. We loved Mr.Brown and we send out our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

“Our songs with Mr.Brown came at a time when everybody was sampling his music and his voice without his permission but soon after, all Mr. Browns attorneys and lawyers put a stop to that and reminded everybody just who was boss, finally getting paid from everyone who sampled him. It was an honor to work with him but it was also an honor to become friends with him.”

Chuck D, who has been more and more reserved lately, told the Associated Press “To this day, there has been no one near as funky. No one’s coming even close.”
