Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs / Top 50 Albums
Why is the only platinum hip hop LP of the year not in there [or anywhere in the Top 50]? Is it enough that rap got a few mentions at all?
It’s Top Ten or nothing here at GroundUp, so we’ll just look at the first in the lists. The next issue of Rolling Stone features the Top 100 Songs and Top 50 Albums for 2006. As usual, RS is a sucker to hype with nothing very surprising for a rock mag covering all bases.
Top Ten Songs for 2006:
Crazy by Gnarls Barkley is obviously #1, and that makes sense. But what are we judging, best song or most popular? Hip hop is reprasented again with Cham’s Ridin coming in at an honorable #3 and What You Know puts T.I at #4. “What you know about that? T.I. knows all about that.” — Rolling Stone genius.
But why is Wamp Wamp by The Clipse at #8? We’re talking best of 2006 right? The beat’s a mess.
Top Ten Albums of 2006:
I’m glad to see Ghost’s Fishscale at #5 and Hell Hath No Fury at #7 but the Chili Pepper’s LP, Stadium Arcadium, made #2 album of the year, so the feat is diminished.
Why is the only platinum hip hop LP of the year not in there [or anywhere in the Top 50]? Could the Ghostface mention maybe cause a second wave of sales for this poor performer? Is it enough that rap got a few mentions at all?
